  • Balloon Neuroplasty — Spinal Adhesion Release

What Is Balloon Neuroplasty?

It is a procedure to treat chronic back pain, where a doctor inserts a small device with Balloon

Advantages of This Treatment

  • Minimal incision, minimal discomfort — this is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure. Tissue trauma is minimal, blood loss is negligible, and general anaesthesia is not required.
  • Fast recovery — no hospital stay is needed for recovery. Patients can return to normal daily activities the very next day.
  • Reduced medication dependence — this procedure helps patients significantly reduce their long-term reliance on pain medications.
  • This procedure has a high safety profile. Patients with underlying medical conditions who are not candidates for open surgery can safely undergo Balloon Neuroplasty.

Conditions Suitable for Treatment

  • Spinal canal stenosis — narrowing of the spinal canal
  • Lumbar foraminal stenosis — narrowing of the nerve root exit channels
  • Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) — chronic back pain persisting after spinal surgery

The Procedure

This is a highly safe and precise procedure, typically taking approximately 45–60 minutes, performed as follows:

  • The patient lies face down on the treatment bed. A local anaesthetic combined with a mild sedative is administered by an anaesthesiologist to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.
  • The physician inserts a needle and injects contrast dye, using real-time fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to precisely confirm the needle position.
  • A small catheter with a balloon at its tip is carefully advanced to the site of spinal narrowing. The balloon is inflated to expand the narrowed area, and medication is simultaneously injected to dissolve the fibrous adhesions and relieve nerve compression.

Treatment

Treatment results typically begin to appear 2–4 weeks after the procedure, with pain relief lasting 6–12 months or longer, depending on the individual patient's response. The extent of fibrous tissue, location, and the degree of narrowing all influence the duration and effectiveness of the results.

Self-care After the Procedure

  • Some soreness, aching, or discomfort at the treatment site is normal during the first 24–48 hours. Applying a cold compress for 10–15 minutes every 4 hours is recommended to help ease any swelling or tenderness.
  • Pain medication may be taken as directed by your physician if needed.
  • You may resume eating and drinking normally after the procedure.
  • Avoid driving for the first 12-24 hours after the procedure.
  • Avoid swimming or soaking in warm or hot water for 1 week.
  • return to their normal daily routine the following day. Avoid strenuous activity or heavy exercise during the first week to allow complete recovery.

Important Precautions and Contraindications

The following patients should discuss their individual circumstances with the physician before proceeding:

  • Individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to contrast media, local anaesthetics, or steroids
  • Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Patients with a bleeding disorder or coagulopathy — including those taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications (blood thinners)

  • Patients with an active infection (systemic or at the injection site), or those with a fever
  • ผู้ทีมีภาวะป่วยทางจิตใจรุนแรง
