Dry Needling
“If you experience persistent muscle tightness, spasms, or recurring chronic pain, Dry Needling is a precise and fast-acting treatment technique that targets pain directly at its source — focusing on releasing muscle tension from within.”

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a form of needling therapy that uses very fine, thin needles — containing no medication — inserted directly into "trigger points", commonly known as "muscle knots". These are areas where muscle fibres have contracted and tightened to the point that blood circulation becomes restricted. Left untreated, these points accumulate into sources of chronic pain that are often difficult to reach through oral medication alone. The mechanical stimulation of the needle encourages the muscle to release, improves blood circulation, and supports the body's natural recovery process.

Why Is It Called "Dry" Needling?

The term "dry" refers to the fact that the needle used is solid — it contains no medication and nothing is injected into the body. This distinguishes it from trigger point injections, in which a physician uses a hollow needle to inject a local anaesthetic or other medication directly into the affected point.

Dry Needling vs. Traditional Chinese Acupuncture

  • Dry Needling — a relatively modern technique rooted in contemporary Western medicine. The needle is directed precisely at trigger points or tight, tender muscle groups, stimulating the release of those knots and restoring normal muscle function. It is clinically focused on musculoskeletal pain.
  • Traditional Chinese Acupuncture — a technique in which needles are inserted at specific points along meridian pathways (energy channels), which correspond to different organs and systems in the body, following the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Who Is Dry Needling Suitable For?

  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome — deep, localised muscle and connective tissue pain
  • Chronic pain — such as persistent neck, shoulder, or back pain (including office syndrome)
  • Sports injuries — tight or spasming muscles resulting from exercise or physical activity
  • Postural dysfunction — caused by repetitive movements or prolonged incorrect sitting posture

Treatment Duration

Each session takes approximately 5–15 minutes, depending on the location of pain and the number of muscle groups with trigger points being treated.

Treatment

  • Most patients experience immediate muscle relaxation and a noticeable reduction in pain following their session. Some patients may feel mild residual soreness shortly after, which is a normal part of the muscle release process.
  • Pain relief can last for several days to several weeks, depending on the chronicity of the patient's condition and their individual response to treatment.

For longer-lasting results, patients are encouraged to attend sessions on a consistent schedule as recommended by their physician.

Post-Procedure Care

  • Mild soreness similar to the feeling after an intense workout may occur during the first 1–2 days following treatment. This is normal and will resolve on its own. Applying a cold compress can help provide relief.
  • During the first 1–2 days after treatment, please be mindful and avoid the following:
    • Strenuous exercise or physically demanding activities
    • Massaging or pressing on the needled areas
    • Applying warm or hot compresses, soaking in warm water, or bathing in hot water
    • Consuming alcoholic beverages
  • If you plan to return for a follow-up session, allow your body 2–3 days to 1 week of rest in between, to give it sufficient time to respond to the treatment and recover fully.
