Trigger Point Injections (TPI)
“Chronic muscle pain or tender, tight knots that hurt when pressed can interfere with everyday life — whether at work, during exercise, or even at rest. Trigger Point Injection (TPI) is a treatment designed to address pain directly at its source, releasing muscle tension and restoring freedom of movement quickly and effectively.”

What Is a Trigger Point Injection?

A Trigger Point Injection is a medical procedure that involves injecting a local anaesthetic — and in some cases, a corticosteroid — directly into a "trigger point": a tight, contracted knot within a muscle that has become abnormally tense. The injection works by releasing the contracted muscle, reducing local inflammation, and interrupting the pain signals being transmitted to the brain.

Who Is TPI Suitable For?

This treatment is particularly well-suited for patients with the following conditions:

  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome — deep, localised pain or pain that radiates to surrounding areas
  • Accumulated muscle tension — causing restricted movement, such as persistent tightness in the neck, shoulders, or upper back
  • Pain unresponsive to other treatments — such as patients who have not improved with physiotherapy or oral pain medications
  • Muscle spasms — arising from stress or overuse of the affected muscle group

The Procedure

This is a convenient, minimally invasive procedure that takes only a short amount of time:

  1. Assessment — the physician palpates the muscle to locate the tight trigger point that is the source of pain.
  2. The procedure — a fine needle is used to inject medication precisely into the target point. The procedure typically takes approximately 5–15 minutes.
  3. What to expect during the procedure : — patients may feel a brief twitch or mild discomfort (a "twitch response") at the moment the needle reaches the trigger point, which is actually a positive sign that the correct area has been targeted.

Expected Outcomes

  • Short-term — pain relief is often felt almost immediately from the local anaesthetic effect, typically lasting around 2–3 hours.
  • Long-term — the muscle gradually relaxes over time, with treatment results lasting anywhere from several weeks to several months, depending on the patient's muscle usage and lifestyle habits.
  • Ongoing treatment — for patients with chronic conditions, repeated sessions at intervals recommended by the physician will progressively extend pain-free periods and deliver more sustainable, long-lasting results.

Post-Injection Self-Care

  • Rest — avoid strenuous activity involving the treated muscle group for the first 24 hours.
  • Side effects — mild soreness or bruising at the injection site may occur, but this typically resolves on its own within 1–2 days.
  • Recovery — after the initial 24-hour period, gentle muscle stretching is recommended to enhance and prolong the effectiveness of the treatment.
