Chronic Post-Surgical Pain (CPSP) is persistent pain that remains after a surgical procedure has ended and the expected healing period has passed. It is defined by the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n

• Pain that continues for more than 3 to 6 months following surgery<\/li>\n\n
• Pain that either did not exist before the surgery, or \u2014 if pre-existing pain was present \u2014 has changed in character or increased significantly in intensity<\/li>\n\n
• Pain that is localised to the surgical site, or radiates to an adjacent area (referred pain)<\/li>\n\n
• Pain that cannot be attributed to another cause, such as post-operative infection or a pre-existing condition such as cancer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  What Causes Chronic Post-Surgical Pain?

  Approximately half of all CPSP cases involve nerve injury sustained during the surgical procedure itself. When nerve damage triggers an inflammatory and immune response, the body releases neurotransmitters that increase pain sensitivity.
